Top 15 Hirevue Alternatives and Competitors

Discover 15 powerful Hirevue alternatives to streamline your hiring process and assess candidates with confidence.

Top 15 Hirevue Alternatives and Competitors

The best HireVue alternative in 2026 depends on which half of HireVue you actually use. Only want the recorded interview? Spark Hire, Willo, Hireflix and VidCruiter replace it for a fraction of the price. Only want the assessment and AI-scoring layer? TestGorilla, Vervoe, Codility and Criteria go deeper on skills evidence than a recorded answer ever will. Testlify covers both halves in one platform: a two-way conversational AI video interview runs inside the same assessment battery as the coding task and the judgment test, so one invite tells you how someone talks and what they can actually do.

HireVue bundles both halves into one enterprise contract with no published price. That's the reason most teams start looking. This guide splits the 15 strongest HireVue alternatives and competitors by format, prints every published price as it appeared on the vendor's own pricing page on 5 September 2026, and marks the quote-only vendors as quote-only instead of guessing.

TL;DR

  • HireVue sells video interviewing, an AI interviewer, job-tryout and game-based assessments, coding tests and scheduling as one suite. Its pricing page lists an Essential and a Premium package and no numbers; you request a demo to learn the cost.
  • Teams leave for three reasons: they pay for a suite when they need one piece, candidates dislike talking to a camera with nobody on the other end, and AI scoring now carries bias-audit obligations in places like New York City.
  • For the video-interview piece, Hireflix ($75 a month), Willo ($59 per live role a month) and Spark Hire ($249 a month) publish prices and get a team live in days.
  • For the assessment piece, Testlify ($139 a month, 3,500+ tests, 100+ ATS integrations on every plan), TestGorilla, Adaface, TestDome and Codility publish prices; Criteria, Vervoe, Mercer Mettl, iMocha, HirePro and VidCruiter are quote-only.
  • For both halves in one tool the shortlist is short: Testlify, Criteria, VidCruiter and HirePro. Testlify is the only one of the four that prints a price.
  • Pick by evidence, not by demo polish: a recorded video tells you how a candidate presents, a work-sample assessment tells you whether they can do the job. Most teams need the second more than the first.

What does HireVue actually sell in 2026?

HireVue is an enterprise hiring suite built around video interviewing and AI-assisted evaluation. Its current platform covers on-demand and live video interviews, an AI Interviewer, Virtual Job Tryout and game-based assessments, technical coding assessments, language proficiency tests, an assessment builder, interview scheduling and workflow automation, in 40+ languages, with integrations into Workday, SAP, Oracle and SmartRecruiters.

Two facts shape how you should think about it. First, HireVue bought Modern Hire in May 2023, which folded a second assessment-and-interview stack into the product, a move HR Dive reported alongside a warning about regulatory attention on AI hiring. So the thing you'd be replacing is broad. Second, HireVue stopped analyzing candidates' facial expressions in March 2020 and said so publicly in early 2021; SHRM's coverage quotes the company saying visual analysis "no longer significantly added value to the assessments" and that it now transcribes answers and scores the content of what candidates say, per SHRM's February 2021 report. If a colleague still describes HireVue as "the facial recognition one", that's five years out of date.

Why do teams look for a HireVue alternative?

Teams look for a HireVue alternative because they're paying enterprise money for a bundle when they need one part of it, because candidates push back on one-way video, and because AI scoring of interviews now brings compliance work that a plain skills assessment doesn't. Price is the trigger. Fit is the real reason.

Start with the bundle problem. A 300-person company hiring 40 people a year does not need an enterprise interview-automation suite; it needs a fast screen and a reliable way to compare finalists. When the bundle is the only way to buy, you end up funding scheduling bots and virtual job tryouts you never switch on.

Then the candidate side. 66% of US adults said they would not want to apply for a job with an employer that uses AI to help make hiring decisions, against 32% who would, in Pew Research Center's survey of 11,004 adults published in April 2023 (Pew, AI in Hiring and Evaluating Workers). That number is from before the current AI wave, and it hasn't got friendlier. Employers keep adopting anyway: SHRM's 2025 Talent Trends survey of 2,040 HR professionals found AI adoption in HR tasks climbed to 43% in 2025, up from 26% in 2024 (SHRM 2025 Talent Trends). The gap between those two numbers is where your candidate experience lives. A tool that scores a recorded monologue sits right in it. A tool that asks a candidate to do a slice of the job sits outside it, because nobody objects to showing what they can do.

And the compliance side, which gets its own section below, because it's the part vendor listicles hand-wave.

How did we evaluate these HireVue competitors?

We scored each alternative on five things a Head of Talent Acquisition would actually check before signing, and we checked the pricing ourselves rather than copying it from another listicle.

  1. What it replaces. Video interviewing, pre-hire assessment, or both. A like-for-like HireVue swap needs both; most buyers only need one.
  2. Published price. Every figure below was read on the vendor's pricing page on 5 September 2026. Where a vendor shows no price, we say quote-only. We didn't quote review-site estimates.
  3. Evidence depth. Does the tool produce a score you could defend to a hiring committee (work sample, validated test, structured rubric) or an impression (a recorded answer, an AI summary)?
  4. Time to first hire. Self-serve trial and a credit card, or a procurement cycle and an implementation team.
  5. Integration and integrity. ATS connectors on the plan you'd actually buy, and proctoring that produces reviewable evidence rather than automatic rejections.

The framework behind the scoring is the Testlify Multi-Signal Talent Evaluation Model: combine multiple role-relevant signals, including assessments, interviews, simulations, references and reviewer feedback, so a hiring decision never rests on one recording or one score. A tool earns a high mark here when it adds a signal you didn't have, not when it automates the one you already distrust.

How do HireVue competitors compare on price?

Eight of the 15 HireVue competitors below publish a price; seven don't (six are quote-only, and Canditech prints tiers without numbers). Entry points run from $7 per candidate (TestDome) to $249 a month (Spark Hire), and the video-interview specialists cluster between $59 and $299 a month. HireVue itself publishes nothing. Format column: video means one-way or live video interviewing, assessment means skills, cognitive or coding tests, both means the vendor sells the two together.

1. Testlify

Image of Testlify homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives
Image of Testlify homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives

Testlify runs the interview inside the assessment, which is what makes it a like-for-like HireVue swap rather than a partial one. Candidates do role-relevant work first: coding tasks, situational judgment, cognitive tests, language checks, typing tests. Then, in the same battery, they meet an AI interviewer that talks back. It is a two-way conversation on video, not a recording sent into a void, and nearly every part of it is yours to set: the avatar (none, one of the stock set, or your own upload), the voice (Alloy, Ash, Ballad, Cedar, Coral, Echo, Marin and more, each previewable before you pick), the AI's prompt in a full rich-text editor or generated from a file you upload, recording time per question, how many attempts a candidate gets, whether recording starts automatically or waits for them to speak. Answers are auto-scored against a rubric you define, and any question can be flagged so a reviewer has to sign off rather than rubber-stamp the AI. Transcripts, AI insights and a beta speech-authenticity check ship with it. One-way video, audio and chat formats are there too, including voice-AI questions a candidate can finish over the phone. Read the head-to-head in the Testlify versus HireVue comparison.

Key features

  • A two-way conversational AI video interviewer with selectable avatars and named voices, custom prompts, per-question recording limits and attempt caps, plus ready-made templates for roles like customer support, sales and data analyst.
  • Auto-scoring with competency tagging per question, a reviewer-sign-off toggle, conversation transcripts and AI insights, so a video answer leaves reviewable evidence instead of a black-box rating.
  • A test library of 3,500+ science-backed tests and 180k+ validated questions, with 150+ interview templates and 25+ custom question types.
  • AI candidate insights that summarize strengths and gaps per skill, with multiple-reviewer scoring so the decision stays with the hiring team.
  • 12+ anti-cheating options (full-screen mode, face detection, session recording, tab-switch detection) that produce reviewable evidence rather than automatic rejections.
  • 100+ ATS integrations included on every plan, with the full integrations list covering Workday, Greenhouse, Lever and SAP SuccessFactors.
  • Platform in 11 languages, tests in 7.

Pros

  • Transparent pricing with a 7-day free trial (no card) and a 30-day money-back guarantee; base price locked for 24 months.
  • The integration you'd need is on the plan you'd buy, not gated to an enterprise tier.
  • Interview and assessment come from one vendor on one invite, so there's no second contract and no handoff between two tools.

Cons

  • No interviewer scheduling: it won't coordinate calendars for a live human panel, so that step stays with your ATS or calendar tool.
  • Credits expire at the end of the billing cycle, so size the plan to real hiring volume.

Best for

Teams from 20 to 20,000 employees that want the interview and the skills score from one platform, with a defensible number on every shortlisted candidate before anyone books an hour.

Pricing

The Standard plan is $139 a month billed at $1,668 a year, with 100 candidate credits ($16.68 per candidate), 3 user seats (extra seats $15 a month) and additional credits at $21 each. A Custom plan covers organizations assessing 25,000+ candidates a year. Details on the Testlify pricing page.

How does Testlify replace HireVue's AI interviewer?

By putting the interview inside the assessment instead of beside it. HireVue's AI Interviewer is a module in a suite you buy whole. In Testlify a video question is one more question type in a battery that already holds 25+ others, so a single invite returns a coding score, a judgment score and an interview transcript in the same candidate report. The configuration runs deeper than most buyers expect: prompt type, competencies per question (with AI suggestions you can accept, swap or regenerate), maximum score, difficulty, question language and recording language set independently, mandatory-question toggles, a preview before anything goes live, and a compliance check on the question itself. Candidates get a microphone and camera check, a practice recording and, if you allow it, more than one take. The setting that matters most is the reviewer sign-off: leave it on for the two or three questions that actually decide the shortlist and let auto-scoring handle the rest. That keeps a person on the decision, which is what the bias-audit rules further down expect anyway.

2. Spark Hire

Spark Hire is the most direct like-for-like HireVue replacement for the video half: one-way video interviews and live interviews, with an optional applicant tracking system called Recruit on top. It's the tool most mid-market teams land on when they want to keep the recorded-interview step but stop paying enterprise rates for it.

Key features

  • One-way and live video interviews with customizable workflows and scorecards.
  • Recruit ATS tiers add automated reference checks, AI resume review (6,000 a year on Pro, 24,000 on Growth), e-signatures and AI notetaker hours.
  • Annual plans include live training and a customer success manager.

Pros

  • Published pricing and an unlimited-jobs, unlimited-users annual plan.
  • The ATS add-on means small teams can consolidate two tools.

Cons

  • It's still one-way video: the candidate-experience objection to HireVue applies here too.
  • No free trial is mentioned on the pricing page, and Recruit plans are annual-contract only.

Best for

Companies up to about 500 employees that run a recorded screen before the first human call.

Pricing

Video Interview Software starts at $249 a month billed annually (unlimited jobs and users) or $299 month to month (5 jobs, 5 users). Recruit Pro starts at $335 a month billed annually for companies up to 200 employees; Recruit Growth at $499 a month for up to 500; Recruit Enterprise is custom.

Spark Hire alternative or HireVue alternative?

If you're searching for a Spark Hire alternative, you've probably outgrown recorded video as the main signal. The fix isn't another recorder. It's a platform that scores the work and keeps the conversation, so a communication-heavy role still gets an interview and every role gets evidence underneath it. Testlify and Criteria both sit in that lane, and Testlify is the one that prints a price.

3. Hireflix

Hireflix does one thing, one-way video interviews, and prices it like a utility. Every plan includes every feature, unlimited user seats, unlimited positions and unlimited interview responses; the only thing that changes with tier is company size.

Key features

  • One-way video interviews with unlimited seats, positions and responses on every plan.
  • GraphQL API, Zapier, Make and 10+ ATS integrations available to all tiers.
  • A 1-month free trial on the Small and Medium plans.

Pros

  • The cheapest published route to a professional recorded-interview step.
  • No feature gating, so a 30-person company gets the same product as a 250-person one.

Cons

  • No assessments, no live interviewing, no scheduling: it replaces one HireVue module only.
  • Pricing is tied to headcount bands, so a fast-growing company moves tiers quickly.

Best for

Companies under 250 employees that want recorded screening interviews without an enterprise contract.

Pricing

Small is $75 a month billed yearly for companies with fewer than 50 employees; Medium is $150 a month for 50 to 250 employees; Custom covers corporates, high-volume recruiting and agencies.

Hireflix vs HireVue

Hireflix vs HireVue is a price-and-scope comparison, not a feature one. Hireflix wins on cost and time to live for a pure video screen. HireVue wins if you genuinely need the assessment library, the AI interviewer and the scheduling automation in one contract, and you have the budget and procurement patience to buy them together.

4. Willo

Willo is an async video interviewing platform, priced in GBP, USD, EUR and AUD, with a pay-as-you-go tier for occasional hiring and an enterprise tier for scale. Its Willo Intelligence layer adds AI summaries and benchmarks on top of the recordings, which puts it a notch above a plain recorder.

Key features

  • Lite: up to 5 live roles, 5 users, 150 assessed candidates per live role, with Zapier and Integrately.
  • Enterprise: unlimited live roles, 18+ languages, ATS integrations including Workday, SAP, Oracle, Greenhouse, iCIMS and UKG, SSO, MFA and ISO 27001.
  • ID and right-to-work checks available as add-ons.

Pros

  • No contract on Lite; you pay per live role per month.
  • Multi-year enterprise discounts are printed on the page ($3,799, $3,419 and $3,229 a year for 1, 2 and 3-year terms).

Cons

  • No free plan or trial is mentioned.
  • Integrations on Lite are limited to automation connectors, not native ATS links.

Best for

Teams with lumpy hiring that don't want to pay for video interviewing in the months they aren't recruiting.

Pricing

Lite is $59 per live role a month. Enterprise is $3,799 a year on a 1-year term, payable monthly or quarterly.

5. VidCruiter

VidCruiter is the closest thing on this list to HireVue's breadth: pre-recorded and live video interviews, interview scheduling, structured interviews, automated references, virtual hiring events, skills testing, video proctoring and an applicant tracking system, sold as modules.

Key features

  • Modular suite covering the whole interview stage, from scheduling to structured scoring.
  • Video proctoring and skills testing alongside the interview tools.
  • Built for complex, multi-stage, multi-location hiring workflows.

Pros

  • Genuinely replaces the suite, not one module.
  • Structured-interview tooling reduces the "gut feel" problem better than a plain recorder.

Cons

  • Quote-only pricing; you fill in a form to learn the cost, which is the HireVue buying experience again.
  • Configuration depth means longer implementation than the self-serve tools.

Best for

Enterprises and public-sector employers with heavily structured, compliance-driven interview processes.

Pricing

Not published. The pricing page asks you to fill out a form for pricing information.

6. HirePro

HirePro is a Bengaluru-based hiring platform built for the scale of Indian campus and lateral recruiting, with coding assessments, functional assessments, proctoring, video interviews, college hiring workflows and onboarding in one stack. If your volume problem is 20,000 graduate applicants in a season rather than 200 mid-career ones, it's on the shortlist.

Key features

  • Coding and functional assessments with a proctoring module for remote exams.
  • College hiring workflows that manage campus drives end to end.
  • Video interviews plus custom assessment and expert-interview services.

Pros

  • Strong fit for high-volume campus hiring, where HireVue's per-candidate economics hurt.
  • Proctoring is core, not an add-on.

Cons

  • Pricing is not published; the site routes you to a contact form.
  • Less proven outside the India campus-hiring context.

Best for

Enterprises and IT services firms running large campus drives in India.

Pricing

Not published. Contact the vendor for a quote.

Is Testlify a HirePro alternative too?

Yes, for the assessment half. Teams searching for a HirePro alternative usually want the same proctored skills tests with published pricing and a faster trial-to-live path, and they want a library that covers non-engineering roles as well as coding. Testlify's skills-based hiring approach is built for exactly that mix. For a campus drive that needs a college-relationship workflow, HirePro still has the more specific tooling.

7. Criteria (HireSelect)

Criteria is the assessment company behind HireSelect, its long-running pre-employment testing platform, now sold as what Criteria calls the Talent Signal Platform. It pairs cognitive aptitude, personality, emotional intelligence, risk, skills and game-based assessments with async and real-time video interviewing, which makes it one of the few vendors here that competes with HireVue on both halves.

Key features

  • Assess: cognitive aptitude, personality, emotional intelligence, risk, skills and game-based tests, with AI proctoring.
  • Interview: async and real-time video interviewing with an AI scoring add-on.
  • Scale claims on its site: 80M+ assessments completed, 4,000+ organizations, 60 countries, 20+ years of talent science.

Pros

  • Deep validated aptitude and personality science, the area HireVue's job-tryouts only partly cover.
  • Video interviewing is included in the same platform, so no second vendor.

Cons

  • Quote-based pricing.
  • Skills and coding coverage is thinner than the assessment-first specialists.

Best for

Employers hiring for roles where cognitive aptitude and personality fit matter more than a technical work sample.

Pricing

Quote-based; the site offers a free trial and a demo but prints no prices.

Looking for a HireSelect alternative?

A HireSelect alternative search usually means one of two things: you want coding and role-specific skills tests rather than aptitude scores, or you want a price on the page. Testlify, TestGorilla and Adaface answer both; Mercer Mettl answers the first but not the second.

8. TestGorilla

Image of Testgorilla homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives
Image of Testgorilla homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives

TestGorilla is a pre-employment testing platform with a 350+ test library, video questions and, on its higher tiers, AI interviews and job simulations. It's the vendor most small teams try first because the Free plan costs nothing and needs no credit card.

Key features

  • 350+ tests covering technical skills, cognitive ability, personality, language and situational judgment.
  • Free plan with 10 credits a month, 5 essential tests and 1 seat.
  • Plus tier adds custom coding challenges, job simulations, ID verification, ATS integrations and API access.

Pros

  • A free tier that lets you run a real pilot before spending anything.
  • Published pricing with annual figures printed.

Cons

  • ATS integrations and API access start at the Plus tier ($4,800 a year), not Core.
  • Core limits video questions to the TestGorilla library.

Best for

Small teams that want to trial skills testing on a free tier and grow into a paid plan.

Pricing

Free at $0. Core is $142 a month on an annual commitment ($1,704 billed annually). Plus starts from $400 a month ($4,800 a year, scaling with volume). Enterprise is custom. See how it stacks up in the TestGorilla alternatives roundup.

9. Vervoe

Image of Vervoe homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives
Image of Vervoe homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives

Vervoe describes itself as an AI-powered skills intelligence platform. Its core idea is the job simulation: candidates write the email, debug the code or handle the mock customer, and AI grades and ranks the responses, with recruiters able to override the score.

Key features

  • Simulation-style assessments across sales, support, engineering and design roles.
  • Mixed formats in one assessment: multiple choice, video, free text, file upload and audio.
  • AI grading with recruiter override of the score.

Pros

  • Work-sample depth that a recorded interview can't match.
  • Flexible formats let you keep a video question for communication roles.

Cons

  • Pricing is request-only; the pricing page carries a "Request pricing" button and no figures.
  • AI grading needs calibration per role before you trust the ranking.

Best for

Teams that want realistic job simulations and are comfortable buying through a sales cycle. The Vervoe alternatives guide covers the published-price options.

Pricing

Not published; request pricing from the vendor.

10. Codility

Image of Codility homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives
Image of Codility homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives

Codility is an engineering-hiring platform built around work simulations rather than puzzles, with a Screen product for take-home assessments and an Interview product for live coding. It's the alternative for teams whose HireVue use was mostly the technical assessment module.

Key features

  • Engineering work simulations spanning software engineering, AI and system design on the Scale tier and above.
  • Invite credits usable in Screen or Interview.
  • Custom tier adds Skills Intelligence, premium proctoring, SSO/SAML and enterprise integrations.

Pros

  • Published annual pricing with clear credit counts.
  • Deep engineering focus with live-interview tooling built in.

Cons

  • Engineering only; no help for sales, support or operations roles.
  • Starter is one user and a limited task library.

Best for

Engineering teams making 10 to 50 technical hires a year that want simulations, not trivia.

Pricing

Starter is $1,200 a year (1 user, up to 120 invite credits). Scale is $6,000 a year, or a monthly equivalent, with 3 users and up to 300 invites (25 a month). Custom is bespoke. Non-engineering alternatives are compared in the Codility alternatives list.

11. Mercer Mettl

Image of Mercer Mettl homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives
Image of Mercer Mettl homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives

Mercer Mettl is the assessment and proctoring arm of Mercer, with psychometric, behavioral, aptitude, technical and communication assessments, coding tests, remote proctoring (SecureProctor and Secure Browser), 360-degree feedback and campus and lateral hiring solutions. It's the pick when the exam has to be defensible and secure above all else.

Key features

  • Psychometric and aptitude assessments grounded in occupational psychology.
  • Remote proctoring products that combine AI monitoring with human review.
  • Coverage for certification exams and learning, not only hiring.

Pros

  • Proctoring rigor suited to regulated or high-stakes testing.
  • Backed by a global HR consultancy, which matters in enterprise procurement.

Cons

  • Pricing is customized per organization; the pricing page collects a quote request and prints no numbers.
  • Heavier to implement than the self-serve platforms.

Best for

Large employers and certification bodies that need proctored, psychometrically validated exams.

Pricing

Quote-based. The Mercer Mettl alternatives roundup lists the published-price options.

12. iMocha

Image of iMocha homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives
Image of iMocha homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives

iMocha is a skills assessment platform that positions itself as skills intelligence: it maps skills across a workforce for both hiring and upskilling, so the same tests feed talent acquisition and learning teams. That dual use is its angle against HireVue, which is a hiring tool only.

Key features

  • Skills tests across IT, finance, language and niche domains, plus a custom test builder.
  • Skills inventories and analytics for internal mobility, not only external hiring.
  • Reporting and analytics by domain and skill group.

Pros

  • One platform for hiring and workforce skills data.
  • Broad domain coverage beyond coding.

Cons

  • Pricing is not published; the site routes you to a demo.
  • Enterprise-oriented setup, slower for a small team.

Best for

Enterprises that want hiring assessments and an internal skills inventory from the same vendor.

Pricing

Not published; book a demo with the vendor. Compare it with the published-price tools in the iMocha alternatives guide.

13. Adaface

Image of Adaface homepage which is one of the Hirevue alternatives
Image of Adaface homepage which is one of the Hirevue alternatives

Adaface is a credit-based skills assessment platform with a 500+ test library. Its pricing model is the interesting part: every plan unlocks the whole library, and you spend credits per test and per candidate, which suits irregular hiring better than a seat license.

Key features

  • 500+ ready-made tests, all available on every plan on a credits basis.
  • Credit costs printed on the page: 5 credits for a ready-to-use test, 10 for a custom test, 1 per candidate invitation.
  • 14-day free trial.

Pros

  • Seven published tiers, so there's a price for a solo recruiter and for a global enterprise.
  • Credits map cleanly to real hiring activity.

Cons

  • Credit arithmetic gets fiddly when you run custom tests across many roles.
  • No video-interview module; it replaces the assessment half only.

Best for

Teams with uneven hiring volume that want to pay per test and per candidate.

Pricing

Individual $180 a year (12 credits), Starter $500 (50), Pro $900 (100), Scale $3,000 (500), Growth $5,500 (1,000), Enterprise $20,000 (5,000), Unlimited $50,000 a year.

14. TestDome

Image of Testdome homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives
Image of Testdome homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives

TestDome sells work-sample tests with no subscription at all: you buy candidate packs and pay only when you test or interview someone. For a team that hires five people a year, it's the cheapest defensible screen on this list.

Key features

  • 2,000+ questions and pre-made tests for 130+ skills across programming, IT, accounting and customer service.
  • Per-candidate packs from 5 to 600 candidates, plus custom enterprise plans.
  • Work-sample format that mirrors on-the-job tasks.

Pros

  • No subscription and no seat license; the cost scales exactly with hiring.
  • Volume discounts printed on the page (20% to 65%).

Cons

  • Lighter proctoring and reporting than the platform vendors.
  • No video interviewing.

Best for

Low-volume hiring teams and agencies that want a pay-as-you-go skills test.

Pricing

$20 per candidate for 5 ($100), $16 for 25 ($400), $10 for 100 ($1,000), $8 for 300 ($2,400) and $7 for 600 ($4,200).

15. Canditech

Image of Canditech homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives
Image of Canditech homepage which is one of the best Hirevue alternatives

Canditech is a job-simulation assessment platform for non-technical and technical roles alike: candidates analyse a spreadsheet, draft an email, write code or answer a video question inside one assessment. It includes video interview questions with unlimited recording attempts, which softens the one-take pressure candidates complain about with HireVue.

Key features

  • A library of 500+ ready-to-use sections, with unlimited questions per assessment.
  • Question types including file upload, multiple choice, coding and video.
  • Enterprise tier includes one-on-one support from a certified psychologist.

Pros

  • Free start with no credit card.
  • Simulations that work for operations, finance and marketing roles, not only engineering.

Cons

  • The public pricing page lists four tiers (Individual, Team, Pro, Enterprise) but doesn't print a price per tier.

Which HireVue alternative fits startups and small teams?

For a startup, the right HireVue alternative is whichever tool gets a defensible screen live this week for under $200 a month. That rules HireVue out on its own terms: no published price, an enterprise sales process, and a suite sized for Fortune 100 hiring. Hireflix ($75 a month) or Willo ($59 per role) covers the video step on its own. Testlify ($139 a month with a 7-day trial) covers the video step and the assessment step together. TestGorilla (free tier) and TestDome ($20 a candidate) cover assessment only.

Here's the trap. Startups tend to buy the video tool first because it feels like an interview, then discover they still can't tell two finalists apart. A recorded answer to "tell us about a time you..." is the same low-signal interview, only asynchronous. A 25-minute work sample scored against a rubric separates candidates in a way a founder can defend to a co-founder. So if the budget covers one tool, make it the one that scores the work. If that same tool also runs the interview, you have just deleted a line item.

Which alternatives support resume-free hiring?

Resume-free hiring means advancing candidates on a demonstrated skill rather than on a CV screen, and the assessment-first vendors on this list are built for it: Testlify, TestGorilla, Vervoe, Adaface, TestDome, Canditech and Codility all let you put a skills test at the top of the funnel before anyone reads a resume. HireVue's Virtual Job Tryout does the same in principle, but inside an enterprise contract.

Across the teams we work with, the pattern that holds is simple: a work sample at application stage plus a structured interview later removes most of the resume from the decision without removing the human. The Testlify Multi-Signal Talent Evaluation Model exists for that design. One signal is fragile; a skills score, a structured interview and a reference together are not. What it does not mean is auto-rejecting on a single score, which is where the compliance section becomes practical rather than theoretical.

Are HireVue alternatives compliant with bias-audit laws?

Any tool that scores candidates with AI, HireVue or an alternative, falls under New York City's Local Law 144 if it substantially assists a hiring decision for a New York City job. The law bars employers from using an automated employment decision tool unless it has had a bias audit within the past year, information about that audit is publicly available, and candidates have been given notice; the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection began enforcing it on July 5, 2023 (NYC DCWP, Automated Employment Decision Tools). The vendor's audit doesn't satisfy your obligation; you have to post it and give notice.

How real is enforcement? Lighter than the headlines, and that's the interesting part. The New York State Comptroller's audit released on 2 December 2025 found DCWP received only two AEDT complaints between July 2023 and June 2025, that DCWP's own survey of 32 companies identified a single non-compliance issue, and that the auditors reviewing the same 32 companies found at least 17 instances of potential non-compliance (Office of the New York State Comptroller). Read that as: most employers are quietly out of compliance, nobody has been caught yet, and a state auditor has now told the city to look harder.

The practical rule: prefer tools whose AI assists a human reviewer over tools whose AI ranks and rejects. A skills assessment that produces a score a person interprets is easier to audit and easier to explain than a black-box interview rating. None of the alternatives above auto-reject by default; treat any setting that does as a compliance decision, not a productivity one.

What does switching from HireVue actually cost?

Switching from HireVue costs three things: the remaining contract term, the ATS re-integration, and the interview questions and scoring rubrics you rebuild in the new tool. Budget two to six weeks for an assessment-first platform with native ATS connectors, longer for a modular suite like VidCruiter that needs configuration.

Run the two tools in parallel on one requisition before you cut over. Compare shortlist quality, not completion rate; completion always rises when you shorten the process, and that alone tells you nothing about who you'd hire. Keep the old recordings in line with your data-retention policy, export your question bank, and re-map the ATS stage triggers on the new side before the first invite goes out. Teams that skip the parallel run are the ones who post in HR forums a month later asking why their pass rate collapsed.

Key takeaways

  • Split the decision by format, then check who covers both. HireVue bundles video interviewing and assessment, and most buyers only need one of them. Deciding which one first cuts the vendor list from 15 to four or five, and stops you paying for modules you never switch on. If you genuinely need both, the list is shorter still: Testlify, Criteria, VidCruiter and HirePro, and only one of those four prints a price.
  • Published price is a signal in itself. Eight of these HireVue competitors print prices; HireVue and the other seven don't. A vendor that publishes a number is telling you it competes on value at that number, which usually means a faster, less painful buying cycle for a mid-market team.
  • The one-way recording is the low-signal format, not video itself. Pew found 66% of US adults would not want to apply to an employer using AI to help make hiring decisions, and the recorded monologue is the format that objection sticks to hardest. A two-way interview a candidate can retake, sitting next to a work sample, changes the conversation from "an algorithm judged me" to "I showed what I can do".
  • Compliance is about how the tool is used, not which tool. Local Law 144 attaches to any AI-assisted decision, and the State Comptroller found enforcement thin but non-compliance common. Configure AI to inform reviewers, never to reject alone, whatever you buy.
  • Evidence beats polish. Under the Testlify Multi-Signal Talent Evaluation Model, a hire rests on several independent signals. Whichever alternative you pick, make sure it adds a signal you didn't already have, not a slicker version of the one you distrust.
  • Parallel-run before cutover. Two to six weeks, one requisition, compare shortlist quality. It's the cheapest insurance on this page.

Hire on evidence, not on video polish

If the reason you're leaving HireVue is that a recorded answer never told you who could do the job, start where the evidence is. Run a Testlify assessment on your next open requisition: a work sample and a conversational AI interview on the same invite, scored against your rubric, with a human making the call. Put that next to your structured interview notes and see how much of the resume you still need. The 7-day trial needs no card, and you can book a demo to walk through the integration with your ATS first.
