How to use the tenure calculator?

For calculating the average duration of service:

Enter the employees’ start dates

Enter the total number of employees for the time period you're analyzing (e.g., 4 employees).

Enter the end date

Input the sum of the total years of service for all employees during that period (e.g., 10 years)

Calculate the tenure

The calculator will give you the average employee tenure, which, in this case, would be 2.5 years.

What is an employee tenure calculator?

An employee tenure calculator is a tool HR teams use to calculate how long an employee has worked. This helps track employee retention rate and service duration. It tracks the average length of time someone is employed before they leave or resign from the job role.

Calculating employee tenure offers an overview of:

  • Employee satisfaction: Longer tenure often indicates higher satisfaction.
  • Employee loyalty: Extended service periods reflect strong loyalty to the organization.
  • Retention policies: High tenure suggests effective retention strategies.
  • Revenue per employee: Longer-tenured employees may contribute more effectively to revenue.

The formula for the tenure calculator is:

Employee Tenure=End date−Start date

This calculates the total duration an employee has worked at the organization, usually expressed in years, months, or days.

How to calculate employee tenure?

To calculate employee tenure, you simply subtract the employee's start date from the end date (or today's date if they're still employed). 

For example, if an employee started on January 15, 2015, and the current date is February 4, 2025. 

To calculate employee tenure, subtract 15 from 4 (the day of the month), which gives us 21 days. Then, subtract the years and months. From January 15, 2015, to January 15, 2025, is exactly 10 years, and from January 15, 2025, to February 4, 2025, is 21 days.

So, the employee's tenure is 10 years and 21 days.

How do I calculate average employee tenure in months or years?

To calculate tenure in months:

  1. Count the total number of months your employees have worked.
  2. Divide this by the number of employees.
    Formula:
    Tenure (in months) = Total duration / Number of employees

To calculate tenure in years, simply divide the result by 12.

Formula:
Tenure (in years) = Tenure (in months) / 12
